Scented text messages will soon become the new thing to download to your mobile phone. German technology developers have come up with what they believe everyone needs, The Smell-Phone.
A German company has announced this week that it has patented a chip for sending scents via text and multimedia messages on cell phones.
A team member from mobile services company called ConVisual told reporters that people could send the smell of such things as the ocean breeze through cell phones via text message from vacation spots or to mark special occasions by sending an aromatic virtual mobile phone bouquet.
The developers have been working on the chips for about eight years, and the technology could be released on to the market by 2010, according to the latest reports. It will be interesting to see how the major cell phone makers and carrier providers such as Verizon and Cingular will adopt the technology.
Initially about 100 different scents will be available on the cell chips, but consumers will require special phones to use them. Developers are seeking partnerships with mobile phone companies for the marketing and distribution phase.
So far researchers have worked on floral and other plesant scents, but the possibilities for various scents are endless.
Also people with scent enabled cell phones will be able to reject the smell-o-text messages.
In announcing the patent, the German group said that the existing Japanese company NTT Communications external scent atomizer for mobile phones has shown that “scent technology is very attractive.” In the United States, Motorola obtained a patent for smell releasing phones and explained that the device would fill a need and address problems of on the go consumers who miss the nice fragrances they enjoy from plug-in devices at home.
The cell technology will be able to combine animated images or video, ringtones or songs as well as the scents to deliver a truly custom message such as a love song, along with images of flowers that your loved one can actually smell on valentines day.
In the future mobile phone users will be able to download Fragrance Playlists just like downloading ringtones today. Who knows, in the future when ordering food via Cellphone you may be able to smell the aroma of the food while watching a video of the meal presentation to help determine your selection.
