“Based on our demographic research, we know that customization is a key mobile behavior among mobile phone owners and especially teens,” said Karl Joyce the senior research manager for Ipsos.

Cell phone manufacturers also try to take advantage of the cellular ringtone craze by coming up with a diverse range of the standard tunes that come programmed into the phone, Thomson said. “They are all trying to put features on their phone that are unique however when they sell millions of handsets it defeats the uniqueness of the handset.” he said.

Janella, 18 and a freshman likes to download songs that she really likes because her phone rings a lot, if i was limited to a defult Motorola or Nokia tone it would drive me nuts. The other thing cellular companies are building in to phones is profiles based on the time or day, for instance Monday to Friday during work hours your phone will automatically go in to a “Work” profile and play a respectable tone at a moderate level, but outside work or school hours it will belt out your favorite tunes which may have lyrics not suitable for work.
