It’s nearing 8:00 on a sweltering night in Phoenix, and as the temperature mercifully dips below 100 degrees, a trillion swelling hormones have collected at the Cricket Wireless Pavilion to experience the Jonas Brothers. Among the undersize pilgrims in attendance are Jordan and Jackie, a pair of blond preteens from nearby Scottsdale. Moments ago, they met the Jonas Brothers in person at a “meet and greet” photo op, and now they stand red-cheeked, quivering and sobbing uncontrollably, as if they’ve been told that Disneyland just burned down, with the world’s supply of kittens and baby pandas trapped inside.

“Omigod omigod omigod,” Jordan says, holding her arms aloft and shaking her palms in the air.

“I got tingles in my body all over the place, because I. Just. Met. Nick. Jonas,” Jackie says.

“I’ve wanted to meet them for, like, my whole entire life,” Jordan says.

After searching the Alltel site today for Cell Phone, Ringtone and Mobile Network information i noticed there was basically nothing about the company itself. To help Alltel’s growth over the years they have snapped up a few other companies such as, 360 Communications based in Illinois which gained them 2.6 Million customers, Aliant Communications which was a 1.8 Billion dollar deal, Verizon Kentucky a 1.9 Billion dollar deal, CenturyTel at 1.5 Billion, Palmetto MobileNet which gained them 2.3 Million customers and Midwest Wireless for 1.083 Billion to name a few.

Then in 2007 Alltel agreed to be acquired by TPG Capital and the equity division of Goldman Sachs Group for $27.5 billion.

Now the clincher Verizon Wireless thought Alltel looked pretty good agrees to buy Alltel for a cool $28.1 Billion Dollars. The merger is set to be done by the end of 2008.

So there you have it, the rise and fall of Alltel as we know it. I’m not sure if Verizon will continue to run Alltel under the same company name or absorb it in to the Verizon Wireless brand.

The Palm Treo 800w released today after a long anticipated wait. The Treo 800w is the device from Palm to take the place of the aging 700wx, and it comes in at $249.99 after a 2 year contract.

Really on the surface the Palm 800w doesn’t look anything spectacular, i was really expecting something with more of a wow factor however it has a fairly modest appearance. The Palm Treo 800w has dimensions of 4.41″ x 2.28″ x .73″ and weighs 5 ounces with battery so it’s quite small and it has a soft touch finish to deter marks from general handling. Also, it’s looses the external antenna that’s good for poking eyes out.. About time!

The screen is a whopping 320×320 in dimensions, and it is recessed in to the unit to prevent scratching and it also sports the usual QWERTY keypad, a 5 way direction pad and 2 soft buttons with 6 regular buttons. So this is 2 more buttons to push than the Palm Treo 700wx. Also on the back it sports a 2 Megapixel Camera and a very rounded shape, and on the right side of the unit an IR port and a MicroSD Memory slot. Over on to the left side, there’s the volume controls and nothing else.

As for the Palm Treo 800w Specifications:

* Operating System: Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro
* Chipset: MSM6800A TI ARM1136 OMAP2430 running at 333MHz
* Memory: 128 Program (DDR) and 256 ROM, of which approx 170 is available to the user.

* Other Data: Bluetooth 2.0 and Infrared
* Battery: 1150 mAh, with approximately 4 hours of talk time or 200 hours standby.

The Treo 800w also has GPS built in, which Sprint hasn’t locked and it works well. The Sprint Navigation is also available for free with the Simply Everything plan. The Palm Treo 800w is actually the first Windows Mobile Pro device to come with version 6.1 standard, and has Push Email, ActiveSync and threaded SMS. So what applications are included?

Firstly what is the Mosquito Ringtone, or as it’s often called Teen Buzz?

There’s actually a few different Mosquito Ringtones, but more on this later. It’s a Ringtone that is a constant tone played at a frequency which is not audible to people over the 25-30 year old range. As you get older your hearing becomes less sensitive, and certain audible ranges disappear from your hearing spectrum. The Mosquito Ringtone is targeted at this range which enables teens to hear the ringtone while adults can’t. The condition has a medical name if you want to look it up, it’s called
“Presbycusis”

Surprisingly this was originally used against teens, over in places like England and also the USA the Mosquito was setup in areas teens loitered and it was designed to annoy them and not effect adults nearby. So the tables were turned, and the teens turned it in to the Mosquito Ringtone or often called the Teen Buzz Ringtone and used it to be alerted to phone calls and text messages in places they weren’t allowed to carry cell phones or mobile phones such as at school.

Now about the different Mosquito Ringtones, they start out at 10khz which generally anyone under 60 Years Old can hear however people older then that can’t. Then they go down to 22.4khz which even some teens can have trouble hearing them, so you need really acute hearing for that one. So the most common Mosquito Ringtone for download is the 16.7khz Mosquito Ringtone.

Also i read over in Australia, there was a bit of an uproar about the Mosquito being offered. Apparently they didn’t like teens being able to use their cell phones in class and get away with it due to the tone being inaudible to teachers.. So i guess that’s what they get for creating a device to annoy teenagers, we will turn it around and use it to our advantage.

The Apple iPhone 2.0 Update Software has been leaked by some smart cookie. The iPhone 2.0 Software Firmware download link has been found direct on the Apple servers ready for download prior to the official announcement.

The 2.0 Firmware file name is iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw and can be downloaded direct from Apple here:

However before you rush out and do this, Apple have stated the 2.0 iPhone upgrade will reset your phone. Here is the info:

You can use iTunes to update or restore iPhone or iPod touch software. Apple recommends updating iPhone or iPod touch to use the latest software. You can also restore the software, which puts iPhone or iPod touch back to its factory condition.

Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software. In this case, iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to. You should ensure that you have enough free space on your Mac or PC to accommodate a backup that matches the capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch (4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB) if you proceed with the this backup.

If you choose to restore, all data is erased from iPhone or iPod touch, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPhone or iPod touch settings are restored to their factory condition. Whenever you update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch software, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to the update in order to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see this document before restoring.

Note the “All your data is erased from your iPhone or iPod Touch devices” so don’t come crying to us if you brick your iPhone, you have been warned.

Here is how to do it if you are game:

To update or restore iPhone or iPod touch

1. Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes/download.
2. Connect iPhone or iPod touch to your computer.
3. In iTunes, select iPhone or iPod touch in the Source pane and click the Summary tab.
4. Click “Check for Update.” iTunes will tell you if there’s a newer version of the iPhone or iPod touch software available.
5. Click Update to install the latest version of the software. Or click Restore to restore iPhone or iPod touch to its original settings. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.
